Everything Bret Victor says in “A Brief Rant on the Future of Interaction Design”: yes! Who decided that screens or “pictures under glass” should be our primary way of interacting with digital information? This talk by Bret Victor also touches on some of these points, the main takeaway being that adopting new ways of thinking are hard for humans to do. Even harder for us is to admit is that we don’t know what we are doing. BUT this should not stop us from thinking in new ways and adopting new processes for listening, thinking, and speaking. Over my lifetime I have been told that screens are the future but Bret Victor makes sure that I question this. How can it be that the future of interaction almost always involves my pointer finger and a small screen the size of my hand? How can it be that programming is almost always text-based? What else can human computer interaction look like?
